Basic Computer Components

Lesson One Questions (Class work Grade). You may use your notes or handouts.

1. What does CPU stand for? microprocessor chip

2. What does a CPU do? Supports a 1 megabyte on-board L2 cache

3. How is the speed of a CPU measured? In GigaHertz (billions of cycles per second).

4. What does RAM stand for? Random-Access Memory

5. What does RAM do for your computer? It stores information while you work and makes your computer run faster.

6. How is RAM different from ROM? A ROM has information that can only be displayed and used or copied, but cannot be deleted or changed. A RAM only stores information while you work, it is not a permanent storage of data, once you turn off your computer everything is erased.

7. What is a motherboard? main circuit board of the computer

8. What happens if a computer is exposed to too much heat? the internal components overheat and cause damage to themselves. Heat is the enemy of all computers.

9. What is the operating system used on PCs? Windows Vista

10. What is the difference between a CD burner and a DVD burner? Which do you think is better to have, if you can have only one on your personal computer? A CD burner is a device that can record data to a compact disk. And a DVD burner reads, writes, and rewrites to DVD’s and reads, writes, and rewrites to CD’s. I think that a DVD burner is better to have in your system. The reason I think that is because the CD burner is already included, so why have a CD burner when you can have it included in the DVD burner……

11. What are the different types of monitors now currently used? How are LCD monitors and CRT monitors different from one another? How are they both different from traditional monitors? There are two different types of monitors being used now a day. One type is a the CRT (it look like a TV set), called flat or perfect flat. The 2nd type is a LCD (liquid crystal display) called flat panel. One is firm from the screen like a TV and the other is like a liquid kind of screen. If you put your finger on the screen, it can go threw. They are both different from traditional monitors because these are more sensitive and can break if dropped but the older models are stronger. Also they are different because the new ones are flat and the old models are like oval shape from the screen.

12. What does a case or tower hold? A case or tower provides power to the major computer components. The case also holds the power supply.

13. Name two different pieces of hardware you might use to input or update information into the computer (not including disks, uploading, etc.) You can use a Video Card and the newest operating system there might be in the market.
